A brass brazening piece rolled into a compressed spring (by winding it around a hapless finger). Beyond what is evidently visible, I also see a panic stricken graduate student, pressing his creation between the thumb and index fingers, pondering about his uncertain future and a pathetic existence that fluctuates between a state of unbearable stress and featureless nothingness, while his (obviously fresh-from-the-famous-undergrad-school-in-madras) labmate snaps a picture of the spring. The photographer is standing behind the entity in question and to his right.
Balaks: very creative piece of writing, maybe U of Iowa will award you an honorary degree. But sorry, both ur guesses are incorrect. Keep at it, mate !
sorry Bubs, those are incorrect. Looks like it is tough. There are a few elements in the image that give clues, but you have to look closely. I am going to repost the picture so that you guys can see more of the image.
2nd guess: A close-up of the stem of a light candle shaped in a cylindrical spiral form? 3rd guess: A close-up of a leg of a furniture. I will identify myself very soon. Just Keep guessing :)
In case the other guesses dont work, based on your previous picture, is it one of those partitioning stems in Hindu temples? Like there will be thousands of those in Tirupathi thought not necessarily spiral, I guess
How about a close-up really zoomed in view of of a rusted guitar string, the thickest one, i.e. E string? If this is true, (very low probability I shoud say), then I think that must be one fundu camera that was used for the pic. BTW, I hope posting so many messages continuosly is OK :), this is fun...
Is this the natural shape of the object ? i.e if it were a spring someone hasn't compressed it and then taken the pic. The title should bear some meaning to the picture otherwise it is pointless.
actually, 'friend' got it right on the 6th guess. i'm thinking i'll restrict guess from next time on, but of course u guys know the next one will be uncrackable.
old_sheperdian, i didn't want to give any clues, it's a lot more fun to bring out the creative side in people.
finally, for the photo enthusiasts, the image was shot using an Oly C-2100UZ, 380mm full zoom, used a +4+2+1 macro filter setup, was at 1/2s, f8.0, although the effective aperture must have been a lot lower. tungsten light, no softboxes.
this is hard to analyze, but if you look closely you will see that the central portion is more in focus than the periphery, which is due to the macro filters. There is also a frayed portion of the metal handing out on the top, which should give a clue.

But something tells me I could be wrong.
How about a new shock-absorber?

Coiled spring under a swivel chair? Okay, this is the guess that doesn't count. A carburettor?
this is a part of a woodden (taatta kalathhu) chair.. near the arm rest
I meant wooden.. sorry for the typo.
1st guess : Close-up of a srew or bolt??!

water heater element?
Balaks: nope, keep guessing.
friend: sorry, keep guessing and identify yourself, the suspense is killing me.

5th guess: A stack of glazed donuts, the picture taken at an angle :)
not furniture, not candle holder, not partitioning stem, not donuts.
maybe i shouldn't make it easier, feels like it really brings out the creative side in all of you ;)
