3 Limits on guesses, thats tough :)
Anyway my first guess is: A passenger ship (like a cruise ship) with windows, probably the picture is inverted and skewed.
BTW, friend = vand

glad to see that no one's even close :) b.t.w., i have not skewed or distorted any of the pictures so far. i will preserve original aspect ratios in all pictures, but they may be maligned in other ways.

although none of the answers are correct as of now, brilliant work, dear friends, your creativity is limitless. i love this ! to summarize, here are the incorrect guesses so far:

1. coat button
2. passenger ship
3. zip loc bag
4. swimmers at swimming pool
5. chocolate cover
6. football stadium

keep at it, folks !

to Raghu Perippa: welcome to the blog !

to bubby: 3 guesses per person, where person is defined as human being with unique DNA signature. as to whether u use different names etc., i can't verify the authenticity of that. honesty policy.

CLUE
since this one turns out to be quite tough, i will give a CLUE (which i have already stated previously, but might have been overlooked):

the pictures posted are usually digitally maligned in one or more ways, except skewing or distortion. think transformation function.

Haven't a clue as to what it is;transformation function?!
1.End-on view of semiconductor chip
2.profile of comp.chip
3. Part of electrical transformer.

Think I've done enough lateral thinking, I need a straight forward answer right away!!

Here is my second one:

Dish scrub holder.

As for your 3-limit restriction, it should be scrapped and a rule based on number-of-guess/day implemented. Otherwise,

1. For hard puzzles, people are going to sit back and relax until junta messes up with several wrong solutions and then play eliminate and conquer. The incentive to be the first to take a guess diminishes, thereby taking the juice out of competition.

2. Once 3 guesses are over, the motivation to visit the website reduces. And thats not good.

3. User loss of precious processing power keeping track of guesses over many days <= no good either.

Recommend 3 guesses/day/person.

balaks: thanks for the suggestions, they are good ones

manoj: more creativity, but incorrect thus far. also, it is not a part of a larger circle. wouldn't want you to chase a dead-end.

please read the repost on the choice of pictures and manipulation.

Bubs: incorrect so far.

Balaks: two of your guesses are the closest anyone has gotten to the answer. if it is remains unsolved for another 48 hours, you'll get 0.5

Guess 1: A pillow cover. I know, I know, it's an odd colour and all that, but there it goes.
Guess 2: It's some part of a Mughal building. Again, I don't know why I thought that. Maybe my recent vacation to Agra is to blame ;-)

Okay, using up my last guess: It's a cloth for sure, the dots form some kind of a pattern, the lower blue-ish strip is part of another pattern ;-)

ok looks like people have given up on this, the answer is: Japanese pagoda. Balaks was the closest with his building/roof answers, so he gets 0.5. good tries everyone !

Bubs, very colorful answers, sorry no bonus points, though :)

The transformation of the image in this case was: color-inversion and rotation 180. It is easy to apply the inverse transform using a word processor. Try it out to see if the picture becomes clearer.
