AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Why do u have to KEEP saying that "One of you is on the right track...."?? Rather distracting,I tell you......
Anyway,guesses:
1.Webcam's lens
2.Modern grating device(probably same as chips-maker),
3.Some kind of refractive analyser to determine the purity of diamonds

(I wanted to vent some of my frustration, did that on the last guess...:))

Glad you are back to pictures :)

I see an electrical connector + harness in the picture connected to the device. So it has to be some electrical device.

My 1st guess: Laser Head inside a car CD player.
