Gotta be a tennis racquet.

Now u cant ask me to be original and all, cos I frankly think it is a tennis racquet like a couple of others....
By the way how are pts awarded if more than one person gets it right? And also the time zone difference creates an ambiguity if it is a first right answer, winner basis.....
Any comments?

>muddian, vand, sai: not a tennis racquet.

>sai: first one gets the points. no ambiguity with time zones. we are all still in the same universe, and thus can define a single time zone for reference, which would be Pacific Standard Time.

>bubs, bhaskar: nope, incorrect.

One thing which needs to be said about this puzzle, and I will add it in the main post, is that this image is not a single shot. you have to identify that which makes up this image.

Is this one or more images put together. Dno't get what you mean by 'that which makes up this image'. I'd have also said fence/racquet. But will wait for explanation.
Tx!

I can see that there are some lines that are different from others. Like from the bottom left corner, lines 1, 5, 9 and 13 (that have a slope of 135 deg) are different. So I guess they are the borders of the actual image.

Can it be a racquet ball racquet? :)

There seems to be a pattern in the lines which slant from top left to bottom right..not so with the other set of lines. So my guesses will be:
2.Cross-and-noughts drawn on a piece of paper, colour inverted and made composite,
3.Solar panels.

BTW,the time zone problem i was talking abt was that the question may be answered before some of us get to see it for the first time,(of course that has a very,VERY low probability). But i guess its unavoidable so forget it.

ok i suppose i will have to make this clearer. and in the event, i might just give it away, but i'll try my best to be vague.

one photographic frame was repeated across the x and y directions to create this image. what was photographed in that single frame ?

when i reveal the answer, it'll be clearer, but that's a ways away.

Yennoda moonavadhu guess...

Frets on a guitar?

Monday, January 23, 2006 5:17:00 PM
Blogger littlecow said...

pardon the unimaginative guess: but, it could be a snapshot of guitar/sitar strings rotated by 45 degrees, tiled and then cropped to make a square. based on the observation that the (please pardon the verbosity and jargon) -45 striations show a monotonic variation in thickness while the +45 striations do not.

It cannot be a guitar fretboard because in the guitar the frets are not equally spaced. The fret spacing reduce gradually to get higher notes in the octave, to essentially produce the necessary geometric progression in the resulting natural frequency of the string based on the tension and vibrating length.

Monday, January 23, 2006 5:28:00 PM
Blogger labdee said...

ya but it could be part of a fretboard (2 frets perhaps?)... or atleast that is what i thought :)

it's a string with vibrations

it's a shot of some dhobi kana from a satellite when all the dhobis were on strike. the lines are empty clothelines criss crossing the dhobi kana. i'm guessing it is tirupur where the millions of nike & adidas t-shirts are dyed and then dried. hence so many lines
how the heck did you put your olympus on a satellite da ?

and bubs, your guess on the previous one inspires me to guess this is the kolam outside srinivasa ramanujan's house in erode.

to be frank it looks the grill outside my home in chennai...and you dont have to count this as a valid guess

Good contest all round, people !

>Labdee: Way to go ! Welcome to the points on ur first puzzle !

>Balaks: tough luck, u missed out by 3 minutes.

>Vand: These are frets, and they are unequally spaced. Look closely, also check out the original. The other thing u can make out is the string thickness, it repeats in a regular pattern. To give you due credit, you identified the pattern before I said it's a composite. Maybe next time I shouldn't give so many clues, and u'll keep winning, eh Vand ?

>Catcharun: undisputed creative guess winner.
